A Somerset Autumn holiday is a special experience that you don’t want to miss. With crisp air and low-hanging mists, the countryside transforms into a beautiful landscape of bronze, gold, and red hues.

At Cossington Park the grounds are alive with autumn colours, and the fruit trees are loaded with seasonal fruit. It’s the perfect time to enjoy countryside walks, comforting stews, and relaxing in front of a cosy fire with a glass of wine.

If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of spectacular flocks of starlings flying over the estate to their roosts on the nearby Avalon Marshes nature reserves. And even on rainy days, guests of all ages can stay entertained with an indoor games room, thousands of books, and games galore.

When you want to explore, you can venture off the estate to explore some of our stunning countryside and seasonal festivals.

Some of our favourite places to visit in Somerset

Avalon Marshes

A magical wetland landscape at the heart of the Somerset levels made up of reed beds, lakes and pools and numerous paths and trails. Visit to see spectacular starling murmurations, as well as thousands of overwintering ducks and waders.

Glastonbury Tor and Abbey

Glastonbury’s iconic Tor has amazing 360-degree views all the way over to Wales. A perfect place to walk with the family.

While you’re there, drop into the town’s famous Abbey – a peaceful retreat in the heart of the town with atmospheric ruins and 30 acres of beautiful grounds.

Cheddar Gorge

A picturesque limestone Gorge with astounding views and lots of wildlife. Take the cliff top walk of around 3 miles, try your hand at rock-climbing, or pop into the famous Cheddar Caves.

King’s Wood and Crook Peak

A great walk for all the family (and the dogs) through ancient woodland and up onto the Mendips. Fantastic far-reaching views across Somerset and over to Wales.

Parking is limited so an early visit is recommended.

Wells Cathedral

Situated at the heart of England’s smallest city, Wells Cathedral is a gothic gem and has been welcoming visitors and pilgrims for around 850 years.

Fabulous Somerset festivals and markets

You’ll also find lots of festivals and markets happening around the county.

The Wells Artisan Christmas Market at the Bishop’s Palace is a great place to start your Christmas shopping. Or visit the Wookey Hole Winter Wonderland for a fabulous family day out, with Christmas lights, Santa Claus, and circus performers.

Hestercombe House is well worth a visit at this time of year too, with a brilliant Christmas market, an illuminated Christmas Garden trail, and Father Christmas.

The Glastonbury Frost Fayre is a unique event with lots of shopping, local food, and live music. Father Christmas keeps very busy in Somerset at this time of year – he’ll be here too!
