Cossington Park History
Tucked away in the beautiful Somerset countryside, near Glastonbury, Wells, and the Mendip Hills, Cossington Park Estate is a wonderful country house with a fascinating history.
Owned by the same family for nearly 400 years, the property has evolved over the centuries, shaped by the people who’ve called it home. It’s not just a house, it’s a warm and welcoming retreat where heritage meets luxurious comfort, offering guests a unique venue to come together with loved ones.
With family stories woven into every corner of the house and grounds, Cossington Park is the perfect place for family holidays, group getaways and special celebrations.
A Home with Centuries of Stories
Cossington Park’s history stretches back centuries, reflecting the lives and adventures of those who’ve lived here. Step inside, and you’ll find a treasure trove of family heirlooms. There are over 5,000 books dating back to the 17th century, original family portraits, photographs and beautiful period furniture.
The dining room fireplace features brass dolphins salvaged from HMS Devonshire, a ship once commanded by Admiral Cathcart Romer Wason, “The Admiral”, grandfather of the current Owner-Guardian, Graham Wason.
The gardens, too, tell their own tale. The beautiful 200-year-old Chinese Zelkova elm, brought back from China by an ancestor, stands as a reminder of the family’s love for exploring distant lands.
Just a short walk away, Cossington Church holds memorials to generations of those who lived at the estate, including Graham’s grandmother, who served as a nurse in France during World War I.
The People Who Shaped Cossington Park
Cossington Park has been home to some fascinating individuals who played active roles in British history, including MPs, barristers, clergy, sailors, military officers, and philanthropists. Their achievements and contributions have all left their mark on the estate.
One of the most intriguing former residents was Cathcart Roland Wason (1907–1998), known to family and friends as Roly, or Pooh! A brilliant Cambridge scholar, he led an unconventional life as an archaeologist, political thinker, writer, and even a bus driver, entertaining passengers with his wit and wisdom. His book, Busman’s View, captures this colourful chapter of his life.
The family didn’t always live in the house you see today. Originally, they lived in the neighbouring manor house, which was sold in 1901 by Reverend Allen Dowdeswell Graham to fund his charitable work supporting disadvantaged children. He went on to establish ICAN, now a leading charity helping children with speech and language difficulties.
