Local Beaches

Although Somerset is best known for rolling hills and amazing landmarks such as Cheddar Gorge, there are also some lovely beaches for walking or water sports.

If you’re happy to go a bit further afield, the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast is around an hour away from Cossington Park. Exmouth Beach and Sandy Beach at Lyme Regis are great family-friendly day outs and have perfect beaches for swimming.

Burnham-on-Sea Beach, Somerset

The long sandy beach at the Victorian resort of Burnham on sea is a perfect spot for sunbathing, building sandcastles, leisurely strolls, or enjoying beach games. When the tide is in, you can dip your toes in the sea, though strong currents make the beach unsuitable for swimming.

The Somerset coastline is known for its pristine sandy shores, untouched dunes, and dramatic tidal changes, making it a haven for birdwatchers.

Keep an eye out for safety information regarding tide times and where not to walk.

Brean Beach, Somerset

Brean is a fantastic long sandy beach where dogs are welcome year round. t’s the perfect spot for a relaxing stroll, walks with the dog, or to simply to soak up the stunning coastal scenery.

From the beach, you can also walk up onto the iconic Brean Down, a dramatic headland with panoramic views of the Bristol Channel, nearby beaches, and even Wales on a clear day.

Off road tampers are available for visitors with limited mobility to go up on the Down, allowing the whole family to take advantage of the fabulous views

Brean Beach Near Weston Super Mare

A glorious long, sandy beach where your pets will be welcome all year round. There’s a dog-friendly café and you can also walk up onto the headland, known as Brean Down, with stunning views across the Bristol Channel to Wales. Whilst leads are not necessary on the beach, for safety when walking on the headland you may want to keep the lead on to keep your pets away from the cliff edge.

 Keep an eye out for beach signs. The beach is largely covered at high tide and there are muddy areas at low tide which pets should avoid.

Weston Super Mare Beach, Somerset

Enjoy a classic British seaside experience at Weston Super Mare, with its iconic Victorian pier, a bustling promenade, traditional donkey rides, and lots of amusement options.

The long, sandy beach has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world, and is the perfect spot for donkey rides, leisurely strolls or kitesurfing. There are events run on the beach throughout the year.

Sand Point & Middle Hope, Somerset

Sand Point is a picturesque peninsula close to Cossington Park. This Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) offers stunning coastal views across the Bristol Channel and is a haven for wildlife.

Just north of the point lies Middle Hope beach. This year round dog-friendly beach is a perfect spot for a walk.

Kilve Beach, Somerset

Nearby Kilve Beach sits at the foot of the Quantock Hills. Renowned for its rich geology and wildlife, it’s a popular spot for fossil hunting.

The beach is a mixture of shingle and sand with lots of rockpools to explore at low tide.

The surrounding cliffs are a Site of Special Interest (SSSI), with amazing views across the Bristol Channel.

Sandy Beach, Lyme Regis Dorset

A pristine sand and shingle beach in the picturesque Dorset coastal town of Lyme Regis, on the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast.

The beach is ideal for swimming, and a treasure trove for fossil hunters, with guided tours available.

You can also take a stroll along the scenic promenade, or indulge in some local seafood at one of the many delightful restaurants.
